OH MY! Where did twelve months of
my life just disappear to? When Lee and I first started to talk about coming
back to Sheffield we were on holiday (in Majorca when we were supposed to be in
Greece, but that is a whole other story) and within a very short space of time
our flat in Edinburgh was sold and we were working out why we were leaving the
UK’s most loved city to return to Sheffield. Your home is always where your
heart is and Edinburgh had surely stolen my heart, so returning home to
Sheffield was always more about people and opportunity.
Moving away in your thirties
turned out to be much more challenging, and therefore far more rewarding, than
I had ever imagined. I left Sheffield being unable to tolerate my own company
and quickly learnt that I wasn’t that bad after all; in fact, I was really
quite funny. Without quoting too many Whitney Houston ballads, the greatest
love of all does, in fact, turn out to be learning to at least like yourself
and to discover where your strengths lie.
Lee and I spent four fabulous
years in Edinburgh and with Lee undertaking his UEFA Pro-licence whilst playing
and coaching at Falkirk, and with me learning to teach Pilates, as well as
working two other jobs in the property sector; we quickly began to pick up on
skills in very different ways. You wouldn’t think that football coaching, or
teaching Pilates, would transfer into estate agency, but actually learning to
find ways to be understood by others, learning to explain what you would like
doing, learning to lead from the front, coaching, teaching, managing,
encouraging, bringing out the best in your team, are all transferable
throughout any working environment.
We have made many small changes
at Spencers since we returned; tweaks, if you like. We have jumped in at the
deep end to learn the accounting systems, so that we know every millimetre of
our business and it has been a steep learning curve but an incredibly enjoyable
one. Having spent four years working for other people, it is hard to know when
to keep your mouth shut and to let the boss have their way, especially when you
are so sure you know a better way. To be wholly responsible for our own destiny
is liberating, and a little bit frightening, but be sure of one thing alone; we
will continue to do everything possible to make this business work for the
reputation of my family and for our continued business to be based upon
recommendation alone. We certainly will not fight to be the cheapest but we
will fight to make sure that all our clients are satisfied with our efforts and
our service.
"“Not for the faint
hearted” was Spencers’ professional description of the house, yet within 10
days of placing the house on their website they had found a suitable purchaser
at a premium over the recommended selling price. From the initial meeting the
service, attention and assistance was of the highest order from the whole team
Spencers. Whilst I am not planning to sell another house in the foreseeable
future I would have no hesitation in recommending Spencers to anyone intending
to sell in this area". - Mr T - Vendor
