The Only Way is Social Media

I have long been preaching about the joys of Social Media, and have managed to find myself on numerous occasions far too excitable about the joys of Twitter. I have even been known to squeal, just a little bit, at an exciting new celebrity follower or retweet. Sorry, sad I know.

So, last week I had the opportunity to go along to a Social Media Event over in Manchester and took a colleague of mine with me to see if I could encourage the rest of the team to become as keen as I am about Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and, so it seems, so much more!

Constant Contact are the company that we use for our monthly newsletters that we send out to all of our clients and contacts to let them know about what is happening in the world of estate agency from our Ecclesall Road branch in Sheffield. We let people know top tips on selling, buying, and presenting their house, as well as featuring testimonials, properties and newsworthy articles that we think people should be reading. It has been very gratefully received by our clients and I love putting it together as it keeps me very much in the loop of market trends and our properties that we are selling.

At our event we were introduced to even more social media outlets and have been let into some expert top tips that we can’t wait to share with our clients over the coming months in our newsletter top tips. I think that, what people don’t realise, is that social media really is a full time job, and that we are now in a world where information is available 24 hours a day and is ever changing. By the time that I finish typing this blog the news will have changed and updated thousands of times throughout the world. What I also have found reassuring is that it is ok that you can’t cover all aspects of social media ALL the time, and that actually you probably shouldn’t. It will be a case of trial and error for you and your business, but actually to choose just a couple of mediums of social media and to focus heavily on them should mean that you always have a very good handle on what you are putting out there and what people happily receive.

For example, Tweeting twenty times a day when you have around 100 followers is probably ok, but updating your Facebook status twenty times a day might make you look a little obsessive about your own life or your own business. You are especially likely to lose friends of Facebook if you are trying to incorporate your business in with your social “friends”. You may wish to show all your friends the photos of your baby walking their first steps but to try to sell them your products each day could become quite an irritant. It is important to know when to separate the two and when too much is too much.

In reality, Social Media is about brand awareness, about engaging with your clients and contacts. You do not want to just pitch to your clients but you want to engage with them, to involve them in your life and in your thoughts, to let them know that you appreciate your connection with them. It certainly isn’t all about you telling others just about how fabulous you might be, it is about telling them how fabulous they are too.

Why not try that today? Tweet one of your contacts and engage with them. Tell them something nice, or just send them a smile to see if you can make them smile back. :0)
